Girl, 13, is killed after javelin thrown during PE lesson goes through her eye

A tragic accident claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl in Russia after she was struck in the head by a spear during a school athletics training session.

The incident occurred on May 3 in the village of Priblizhnaya, located in the Kabardino-Balkaria region of Russia.

According to investigators, a 17-year-old boy threw a training spear while the coach was not present on the sports field. The spear struck the young girl in the eye, resulting in fatal injuries.

She was rushed to the hospital and remained in intensive care for four days but sadly succumbed to her injuries.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a criminal case to determine whether proper safety protocols were in place at the time of the incident. Authorities are also reviewing the conduct of the teacher who reportedly left the students unsupervised.

In addition, the regional prosecutor’s office has begun an independent review into the quality and oversight of the services provided by the sports school.

The girl’s death follows a similar rare incident in 2020, when an Australian high school student was impaled by a javelin during a physical education class.
